ISO/IEC 17025, "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories", is the leading international standard by which testing, calibration and sampling laboratories are accredited worldwide. It defines the requirements for technical competence, independence (objectivity) and consistency in the laboratory's work - and thereby ensures that results are accurate, reliable and recognized, both for regulatory compliance and for international recognition and trade.
In Israel, accreditation to the standard is granted by the Israel Laboratory Accreditation Authority (ISRAC), a member of the international organization ILAC. An accredited laboratory is not "accredited for everything" - it receives a formal scope of accreditation that specifies exactly which tests and parameters it is authorized to perform, and it is subject to strict periodic audits and oversight in order to maintain its standard over time.
